!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Two days ago I discovered an epic craigslist ad. For the longest time I have been wanting an old Honda CBXXX to just bomb around town and have a blast with. Well two days ago I found a beautiful looking one listed for $3000.

Kinja'd!!!

(These pictures are from the Craigslist ad) I nonchalantly sent the seller a text saying “Awesome bike! I don’t have the cash laying around to buy it but GLWS!” The response I got turned into a conversation resulting in the seller saying “I’d actually sell it for $1000.”

Kinja'd!!!

I immediately put my current bike up for sale to offset all the money that will end up going towards the CB and scheduled a test ride for two days later. I wasn’t planning this and I still had work I wanted to do on my current bike e.g. the next day I made a new exhaust system yesterday (see video above of the sound). I also have bigger jets on the way to rejet the bike but I already have potential buyers. Hmm...

Kinja'd!!!

So when I show up for the test ride I’m greeting with this AMAZING paint that looks like it’s straight out of a 1970s games show aaaaaaand all the problems a bike develops when it sits in a garage for years; it doesn’t run.

Kinja'd!!!

I was able to go through the whole bike, found out why it doesn’t run, and discovered aaaaaall of the other issues this bike has. It has a lot of issues. It’s going to cost money. But remember that awesome paint?

Kinja'd!!!

I did actually manage to get the engine to run for a split second and oh my god. I love the sound the old CBs produce.

Kinja'd!!!

The seller and I settled on $500 and I’ll have the bike tomorrow. It needs plenty of love but I can’t wait to bomb around on this. My current bike (1986 Honda VT700C, btw) may be sold tomorrow morning. I will certainly miss that bike. I suppose this is one of those bitter sweet moments. I’m losing one child to gain another.

Thanks. I’ve got my work cut out for me, but it’s nothing I haven’t done before.

I've got 74 CL Scrambler 175 that's been sitting for 20 years I've been meaning to get it running but I keep putting it off good luck.

It was my grandfathers he bought it new, rode it for just one season then passed away, my father then took it and rode it until about 86 it then sat until I turned 15 in 1990 and got it going. I rode it until I finished college then I put it up in 1997 always meaning to ride it again. But its small size and living in metro Atlanta has kept it parked.

Neat!

My father has an old ’70s Honda buried under a mountain of junk in the garage. It hasn’t run in about three decades. I’m thinking about trying to get it running, if he’s willing to excavate it.

Go at it! Let me know if you need some help. I might be able to provide a tip or two to make progress.

All I know about this one is that the fuel tank has rust inside, and I fully expect to have to clean & rebuild the carb. I’m pretty handy, but I don’t know anything about motorcycles or carbs. (I did rebuild the TBI on my truck, though.)

I’m sure the battery’s junk too. At least it hasn’t been left outside. How do you check for a seized engine on a bike?

Good luck $500 is NP if you can do the work.

Carbs are easy sauce to rebuild; there’s not much to them.

To check to see if the engine is seized, throw it in the highest gear you can and try to roll the bike. A slope may help. Assuming the brakes aren’t rusted to hell you should be able to move a bit. Also, you could raise the rear wheel and gently try to kick the engine over. I say gently because I’m sure slamming your body weight down on a seized engine could end poorly.

Thanks. And I certainly intend to make this $500 a dream to ride. The hardest thing about working on bikes is changing tires in my opinion; with 10" spoons...

Thanks! I’ll see about getting it dug out of there. I wonder what model it is. I think he said it’s a ’72.

Kinja'd!!!

This is my experience with changing tires. Remove them, take them to the place, wait an hour, take them home, notice one is backwards, return it & less than 7 minutes it’s mounted correct.

Also notice how they changed the “seventy” to “eighty” whiteout the S, change the v to an i and change the e to g and n to h .... $10/hr raise

Man, this makes me want my old ‘77 GL1000 back, it was the same color.
